Children with Celiac Disease

My daughter was first diagnosed at the age of 6 with Celiac.  It being genetic, and with my problems, I was the logical person to be checked out next.  She was so brave and she had been feeling badly for so long that she would have done anything for her stomachaches to go away.  We did the blood work, which came back positive, and scheduled the biopsy.  It was no surprise that the diagnosis was confirmed for us both.

Changing her to a gluten-free diet was relatively easy as she wasn't a picky eater and she was willing to lower her standards on the breads and cereals she ate in order to feel better.  She tried it all.....she liked some stuff and didn't like others.  We found her favorites (a gf children's product guide in another post).  At first, I thought that if I accidentally got a little gluten or didn't be specific with a waiter or restaurant manager, it was not a big deal.  I get a little ill, but I don't get violently ill.  One day, my daughter said, "Mommy, I think I will eat like this until I'm 15."   I was a little taken aback and she continued, "then I am going to eat whatever I want because I will be a teenager."

As any good mother would do, I quickly explained to her that she would probably become very sick and that she had to eat like this the rest of her life so that she would be healthy.  That even if she didn't have a physical reaction to gluten on the outside, it was possible that her insides were not feeling well and she could show other symptoms.  I stressed to her the importance of her food choices and how smart she would be for continuing her gluten-free diet.  She agreed and said okay and we went to school.

Every time I go out to eat or am picky about my food and how it was prepared, I think of my daughter.  If our children don't see us being diligent about our dining out experiences or practicing allergy friendly cooking in our homes, then they don't take it as being important either.  I go out of my way to ask questions and get clarifications in restaurants, enabling her to have the tools to dine out without me as she gets older and is tempted to eat those french fries, even though they were not cooked in a dedicated fryer.  I am particular and strict for two reasons, because I feel better if I stay completely gluten free, but most importantly I do it to set a good example for her.

It's hard enough to be a child today, but to have to single yourself out with your peers and always be the one that can't eat that or eat there, can make you feel singled out.  I want her to be confident with her food choices when I can't be there to stick up for her.

Do you have any good suggestions that you arm your children with?  Would love for you to share them with us and our community......

Bars, bars, and more bars...

I don’t mean the kind you order a drink!  As a busy mom I sometimes don’t have time to stop for a bite to eat....since I’m gluten free, getting a quick, safe meal can be difficult. Before I was diagnosed I ate meal replacement or protein bars...now that I have Celiac I had to find gluten free bars. Boy, was I thrilled to find out that there were some great and delicious gluten free bars.  One of my favorite are the Think Thin or Think Thin Crunch Bars...10g of protein, no refined sugar, 4g of fiber.  Tastes like a candy bar.  I make sure that these are packed in my carry on when I leave town, or in my purse when I run errands during the day.
My next favorite are KIND Fruit and Nut Bars. These bars are a meal replacement that is all natural, gluten and wheat free, dairy free, cholesterol free,  low glycemic index, 4g of fiber, and Non GMO and trans fats.  Great alternative when you are on the go.  Since I am gluten free, drop me a note and let me know what some of the other allergen friendly bars are available so we can pass it on to our users and readers at www.canieathere.wordpress.com or www.CanIEatHere.com(coming soon!)
